The Island of Longing – An authentic glimpse into Island life

The Island of Longing
The Island of Longing by Anne Griffin

The Island of Longing, an impressive new book by Anne Griffin.

Bestselling Author Anne Griffin is no stranger to Cape Clear Island. A frequent visitor it was there she decamped to write her first ( as yet unpublished novel) and enjoys its beauty, peace and sense of community.

A West Cork Island not unlike Cape Clear

So we are delighted that her third novel, The Island of Longing, available from the 4th May is set on a West Cork Island, not unlike Cape Clear. As a professional and polished writer, Anne is curious, meticulous and shows commendable attention to detail. While the novel is entirely fictional, more of that later, she goes to great lengths to capture the essence of Island life  and the factual accuracy of the details presented as background to a poignant universal story  based on a deep personal trauma.

Heroine, Rosie O Driscoll, modern and vulnerable.

Anne is a writer who portrays a modern Ireland, without cliche, a deep sense of past giving rise to a changed present. The heroine, Rosie O’ Driscoll is a modern lady, both an accomplished  seafarer and a mother with all the deep and vulnerable instincts of motherhood. Like other such works featuring Islands the novel understands and  explores the dynamics of the ferry service and its relationship with the island community.

Its still only a Novel

But since it is a novel and since the Island is just the backdrop to a powerful story it was carefully reviewed by Island residents to remove any references, entirely coincidental that could have been inferred to any individual living on the Island. So this is a story to be consumed about a time,   place  and characters that could have been, but never was.

The Island of Longing is published by Sceptre and is available in Easons, Kennys and all good bookshops.
